On this week’s cover, the Army is laying out a new noncommissioned officer career timeline that requires more time in rank for a promotion, and less time to stay in-rank before you’re promoted or separated. Average time in rank for sergeants first class and master sergeants will increase by a year and a half and just over two years, respectively. Also this week, as the Army re-configures its brigade combat teams, about 200 units will be inactivated, while hundreds of small units will be moved or converted to other brigades. Do you think veterans who choose to study math or…
Ten witnesses testified in defense of Pfc. Bradley Manning between July 8-11, as his defense attorneys argued that though he is guilty of releasing a mountain of sensitive documents, he did not risk American lives in the process. In week six of Manning’s court-martial on charges that the hundreds of thousands of documents he gave to WikiLeaks resulted in danger to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, the defense opened and rested their case at the Fort Meade, Md. trial. The defense called law Harvard professor Yochai Benkler to dispel the most serious of Manning’s 21 charges, aiding the enemy. Benkler…

On this week’s cover, the Army is offering huge perks to soldiers looking to go spec ops. Thousands from every MOS are needed to fill jobs, and the payoff includes huge cash bonuses and faster promotions. Additionally, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment has opened positions to women and is actively trying to get the word out. It doesn’t look like the Army will be tossing out the tape test any time soon, but they closing some loopholes that have allowed soldiers to cheat the system. Soldiers who bust tape must be enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program within…
The government called its 28th and final live witness this week as the prosecution wrapped up its case in the Bradley Manning court martial. In addition to bringing in a Defense Intelligence Agency official for a closed-door testimony, the prosecution presented two key pieces of evidence that could prove Manning information leaks aided al-Qaida. They cited an al-Qaida propaganda video in which an American member of the group referred to information from the leak. Additionally, battlefield reports and other information Manning leaked were found on digital media seized during the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. The…
Turns out, the everyday American fashion staple came from the minds of America’s best and brightest. The U.S. Navy issued its first t-shirt in 1913 as an undershirt for sailors to wear with their uniforms. The Army followed suit during World War II, to help keep soldiers cool(er) in the sweltering Pacific theater. In honor of its 100th birthday, t-shirt company Custom Ink is selling a military-themed shirt and donating 100 percent of the proceeds to to the Yellow Ribbon Fund, which supports wounded service members recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Check out the site to pick up…

On this week’s cover, we’ve got all of the details on Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno’s announcement that the Army will cut 10 brigade combat teams by 2017. Brigades from the 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne and 1st Infantry Division are just a few on the block. While the BCTs themselves will inactivate, some elements from each will be reorganized into other divisions. Last week’s Supreme Court decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act means big changes for the Army. The Defense Department has said that same-sex spouses will be fully legally recognized, which will include everything…
